Improving Your Pool Game by Shooting Against Stronger Players
No one likes to lose. If you are a highly competitive person it is one of the worse things to happen. For those of you trying to improve your pool game and finding themselves losing a lot it is important to realize the positive things that are happening when you lose a game. It isn’t enough to simply lose a game, you need to analyze what you did wrong and what the other player is doing that made their game better than yours and helped them beat you. Finding players strengths, the things that make their game strong, is also a key to understanding their weaknesses. It will help you recognize your own weaknesses in your game.
A really great way to improve your game is to play against players that are better than you. These are the people that have been shooting for years and are long in the tooth in their pool game. They have a tight grasp of the knowledge of pool and all its little intricacies. If you play against them, watch them carefully and gain some insight into their pool philosophy when they approach the table. This will help you to understand your own flaws and weaknesses in shooting pool. It will also improve your own shooting. Watch what balls they choose to shoot and ask yourself why. If they are consistent you will begin to see patterns in how they choose their shots and why. It will help you to gain understanding of leaves and English.
Try to find as many pool players to play against on a regular basis and shoot as often as you can. This will help you to see the different styles and philosophies that different players use and you can begin to integrate their strengths into developing your own style of shooting. It’s not enough to shoot against one person because that doesn’t help to broaden your understanding of the game of pool. It is limiting because you are only seeing one perspective, shooting against other players who have different disciplines and styles is an important key to strengthening your game. Just as you wouldn’t write a book report on a subject based on one book and one person’s knowledge of the subject, you shouldn’t try top improve your game based on one player’s style of shooting.
Open up your mind by shooting against a variety of players that shoot better than you. It will improve your game and help you to gain an understanding of why they are shooting so much better than you and they are more consistent. Don’t be afraid to ask them questions. Most pool players are more than happy to give tips to another player who is trying to learn or improve their game. Most of all don’t forget to have fun and don’t forget to laugh at yourself when you make mistakes. Nothing is that bad that you shouldn’t be able to step back and say, “Man that was an awful shot!”
